New York’s Decoration & Design Building Presented An Insider’s Guide to Maison & Objet

With Global Trend Ambassador Patti Carpenter

New York’s Decoration & Design Building hosted an international design evening with Maison & Objet’s Global Trend Ambassador, Patti Carpenter, in the Robert Allen showroom. Guests discovered emerging macro trends as shown in this season’s Paris Trade Shows, including color trends, print, design and material, with a focus on their influence in the U.S. Home Décor industry. Also in attendance was Maison & Objet Director Gaston Isoldi.

Attendees explored the crossroads of innovation and design as Carpenter presented a distilled look at the must-see introductions the Industry will be buzzing about for seasons to come. Key trends from the over 2000 exhibitors at the Paris Trade Show (featuring 620 new brands) included: pale, mid-range color palettes, vegetal green color schemes, matte and dusty surfaces, highly detailed and texturized carpets, monochrome patterns in tabletops and seating, beetle and butterfly prints, a Scandinavian take on retro 70s colors, and materials that evoke a sense of touch.

Interesting material trends included: cork, colored and cut in new ways; feathers, oversized and used in lighting; brass with embossed patterns; intricately woven fibers like string and macramé, found especially in outdoor furniture and in screens, lighting, and shelving; and black mesh, utilized in complex structures for lighting and wall décor.

Among the many patterns Carpenter saw emerging were: lighter indigo tie dye (most impressively on leather), faces/masks, floral/nature patterns, birds and butterflies, jungle/tropic prints, spots and dots, multicolored stripes, jacquard patterns (especially in craftsmanship), and a Nordic approach to a checkered or square pattern.

Lastly, Carpenter shared her favorite showroom inspirations from Maison & Objet, which included Preciosa’s chandeliers hung by balloons, innovative ways of displaying textiles—such as piled in a bathtub with a model, and Christian Lacroix’s giant birdcage to show off the brand’s latest bird print designs.

The event was the Decoration & Design Building’s third installment of their exclusive Designer Forum Series. Throughout the year, the DDB will be teaming up with leading experts of design and luxury to elevate the design conversation and provide added value to the interior design community.
