DDB SPRING MARKET 2018 Al Fresco; Inside Out At the Decoration & Design Building

The Decoration & Design Building Spring Market 2018 in New York City explored the theme Al Fresco; Inside Out with the top editorial voices, leading industry trade organizations and dozens of design influencers plus thousands of attendees. Blazing new and established trails, experts in interior design, landscape architecture and furnishings studied the intersection of interior and exterior spaces within three Keynote Events, 13 In-Showroom Programs, four Cocktail Receptions, one Special Event and 65 Open Houses. Over 130 showrooms, and their respective manufacturers at the D&D Building, produced sensorial experiences which sparked enlightening discussions on design throughout the day.

The She Said, She Said… Inside & Out keynote session, moderated by Interior Design Editor in Chief Cindy Allen, was a lively discussion including two design powerhouses, Alexa Hampton of Mark Hampton Interior Design and award-winning designer Ghislaine Viñas. Together they lent their distinctive perspectives on breaking down the walls of the home to expand one’s own design aesthetic seamlessly into interior and exterior spaces. Designers listened to the discussion at the recently expanded and redesigned Walters showroom in Suite 538 which was adorned with modern and contemporary outdoor furnishings in cool-tone greys with pops of summer brights.

Garden Design in America’s Playgrounds keynote session was hosted by NYC&G (New York Cottages & Gardens) Editor in Chief Kendell Cronstrom in the newly merged Michael Taylor | Jim Thompson showroom in Suite 1640, highlighting the esteemed design portfolio of landscape architect Mario Nievera. During the presentation, Nievera shared his secrets to harmoniously balancing colors, light, form, texture and detail. Taking audiences on a transcendent journey to the sumptuous gardens from the Hamptons to Palm Beach, Nievera unearthed the various similarities and differences of his most popular projects. The elegant showroom was designed according to theme incorporating tropical prints, bold patterns and rich colors.

Familiar Motifs, Modern Forms keynote session attracted many eager design influencers joining Traditional Home Editor in Chief Jill Waage for an interview with interior designer Thomas O’Brien. He released his first outdoor collection and shared a fresh perspective on outfitting patios. O’Brien is best known for entwining his modern view with classic design which artfully tethers his furnishings to history. The Patterson Flynn Martin showroom (Suite 632) surrounded guests with a view of midtown Manhattan as they enjoyed riveting conversation and jovial banter between self-proclaimed “fangirl” Waage and her longtime idol O’Brien.

Select In-showroom programs were centered around the latest book releases offering guests a signed copy from their favorite design authors. In the session Barfoot Luxury Living, author Sandra Espinet signed her design book Barefoot Luxury. Also, guests awaited their signed version of Creating Beauty: Interior by Kathryn Scott and Restoring a House in the City by Ingrid Abramovitch. Featuring picturesque private gardens from cover to cover, signed copies of Gardens of Style by Janelle McCulloch takes readers on a visual journey. Cocktail parties celebrated the glamorous world of cosmopolitan society with the help of Roger de Cabrol’s scrapbook, Beautiful People of the Café Society: The Scrapbooks of the Baron de Cabrol. Martyn Thompson presented his collection of perennial rugs offering guests his signature on his latest books, Interiors and Working Space: An Insight into the Creative Heart. Meanwhile, Lladró filled the evening air with their Light & Scent collection, and Kettal invited guests to enjoy the splendor of their newly minted terrace during a sunset fête.
